The total output of Shandong's farming, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishing industries exceeded 1 trillion yuan (about $154.8 billion) for the first time in 2020, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

Last year, the total value of Shandong's agricultural output reached 1.02 trillion yuan.

Since 1990, Shandong's agricultural output has led China. Its fresh water and arable land resources only account for about 1 percent and 6 percent of China's total, but its output of grain, meat, fruits, vegetables, aquatic products, and peanuts account for 8 percent, 9 percent, 10 percent, 11 percent, 13 percent, and 16 percent of China's total, respectively.

The agricultural powerhouse has been ramping up efforts to increase the efficiency and quality of its agricultural sector, as well as accelerate its modernization and supply-side structural reforms.

In 2019, Shandong's contribution rate of agricultural science and technology progress was 64.56 percent, 5 percentage points higher than China's average level.

In 2020, Shandong's total grain output was 54.47 million tons, an increase of 898,000 tons over the previous year and the highest in China.

Greenhouse vegetable planting technology from Shouguang, Shandong province, which has more than 100 patented technologies, has gone through seven iterations and been promoted in more than 20 provinces and municipalities across the country.

Shouguang is China's largest vegetable production base and vegetable distribution and price-setting center. Every minute, more than 8,000 kilograms of vegetables from Shouguang are sold at home and abroad.

The province is also working to improve its marine ranches. It is currently home to 79,000 hectares of marine ranches, generating more than 250 billion yuan in income in 2020.
