Geographical Position

Booming Marine Economy

As the largest peninsula in China, Shandong Peninsula boasts beautiful sandy beaches, rich marine resources, and a world-class port cluster. Shandong has a coastline of 3,345 km, accounting for one-sixth of the national total. It has a total sea area of around 159,500 square kilometers, to match its 157,000 square kilometers of land area. In 2017, the gross ocean production of Shandong reached 1.4 trillion yuan, one-fifth of the economic aggregate of the province. The comprehensive cargo throughput of Qingdao Port, Rizhao Port, and Yantai Port, the top three ports in Shandong, stands at 1.3 billion tons, accounting for one-tenth of the national total. Its industrial added value of marine fishery, marine transportation, and other industries also take the lead nationwide. Shandong is a core base of national marine technology innovation. Its marine technology contributes more than 65% of the production value of ocean industry, five percent higher than the national level. Shandong Peninsula is home to Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ocean University of China, and 54 other central and above municipal-level ocean-related institutes and educational institutions are stationed in Shandong, as well as 46 national marine technology platforms. Among these, more than 30 are world-leaders. More than 50% of China’s high-level marine technology personnel can be found in Shandong. The home port of “Jiaolong” submersible, which is a world-leading deep-sea technical equipment research platform, is located in Shandong.
