Qingdao Export Processing Zone is located in the central zone of strategic layout of “Protection around the Bay and Developing in the Bay” in Qingdao. It is adjacent to downtown Qingdao, Port of Qingdao and Qingdao International Airport in the east and near to the development zone and Qianwan port in the west. It was established upon the approval of the State Council in March, 2003, passed the joint acceptance of 8 national ministries and commissions in December, and was put into operation officially in August 2004. The area approved by the state is 2.8 km², and the designed area in phrase one is 1.58 km². Qingdao Export Processing Zone has 450,000 m² factories  of all kinds and 28,000 m² bonded warehouse. Its supporting infrastructure meets the standard of "nine supplies and one leveling", and the road, water, power, heat supply, gas supply and information facilities reach the first-class park level. To date, Qingdao Export Processing Zone has introduced 119 domestic and foreign projects, including 60 foreign projects with a total investment of 1.03 billion dollars and a received foreign capital of 480 million dollars, and 59 domestic projects with a total investment of RMB 1.54 billion. There are 66 enterprises in production and about 7,000 employees. In 2017, the trade volume of Qingdao Export Processing Zone achieved 3.61 billion dollars, including 890 million dollars of import-export volume.
